The Settings dialogue is available both from the menu in Outlook...
and from the tray icon in Windows.
Why are "Append filing status" and "Set filed category" indented?
The indentation indicates that "Append filing status…" and "Set filed category…" are dependent on "Move filed items to deleted folder." Since emails moved to Deleted are being discarded, updating their metadata is unnecessary. The grouping clarifies that these settings only apply if the email is not deleted.
Force filing on send
If you want to ensure that messages are filed, you can enable the Force filing on send message which removes the Send Only button from the filing interface.
Marking messages as filed
If you prefer to keep your inbox clear you should select the option to Move filed items to the deleted items folder. If you prefer to keep them in your inbox but would like some visual indication that they have been filed, you can un-check this option and check one or more of the sub-options. Messages will then show their status as seen in this example:
If you check Set 'Filed' category for filed items, the subject line will be updated to reflect the current filing status of messages. This will change as the message is processed and can be any of the following:
- [Filing:Queued]
- [Filing:Cancelled]
- [Filing:Error]
- [Filed:YYYY-MM-DD] e.g. [Filed:2020-11-04]
